Device Security

All electronic devices that can access the Internet should be secured to reduce the risk of compromise. Many home entertainment and utility devices, such as monitoring systems, smart devices, and video game consoles, can access the Internet, record audio, and capture video.

✅ Update and upgrade devices regularly.

✅ Schedule weekly reboots.

✅ Cover cameras when not in use.

✅ Limit sensitive conversations around audio recording devices.

✅ Disconnect devices when connections are not needed.

Always keep operating systems (OS) up to date because they contain security features not found in previous versions. Using an outdated OS can leave the user open to vulnerabilities patched in the most recent version.

✅ Use a modern operating system.

✅ Only install patches and updates from a trusted sources.

✅ Enable automatic updates if available.

A router is a gateway into a home network, which means if it’s compromised, it can also lead to other devices on the network being compromised.

✅ Consider using a personally owned routing device.

✅ Keep routing devices up to date and enable automatic updates.

✅ Create a separate wireless network for guests.

✅ Disable Universal Plug-n-Play (UPnP).

✅ Disable the ability to perform remote administration on the device.

✅ Only make network configuration changes from within the internal network.

✅ Replace devices when they reach end-of-life (EOL).

Check back often for new updates!
